2017 Theme and Activities

So like every great festival we have come up with a theme and would love you to dress up on the Saturday night.

Be as creative as you like!

As Up in the Clouds is on wooded sand dunes, surrounded by wildlife and magic, cover yourself in fairy dust and turn yourself into a:

Mythical Woodland Creature

Things to do

Yoga at Up in the Clouds…

Steph is a registered Hatha yoga teacher based in Bristol, with over 300 hours of training and 3 years of teaching experience, and a particular interest in mindful yoga for stress and anxiety. She aims to make yoga accessible to all, regardless of your perceived ‘ability’. The emphasis will be on releasing tension rather than forcing yourself into a prescribed shape. So whether you’re a seasoned yogi or simply yoga-curious, come and explore the joy of therapeutic movement and breath to enhance your festival experience!

Fri & Sat (10am)

Uplifting Hatha Flow

Get the festival off to a good start with an energising, warming sequence. Explore your strength, flexibility, and balance. Forget about the ‘perfect’ pose, get to know what feels right for you and simply enjoy moving on your mat.

Sunday (11am)

Unhurried Yin / Restorative yoga

Our Sunday session will focus on returning the nervous system to its natural state of rest and relaxation. Release common areas of tension such as the neck, jaw and shoulders, and allow space for your breath and mind to settle. Restore physical, emotional and mental wellbeing and nurture a deep inner peace.

Yoga essentials:
Please pack your yoga mat if you have one. There will be some available to borrow, along with blankets, belts and blocks. Wear warm layers too!

Drag Queen Workshop

Yes you read that right, get your high heels on and your best singing voice and learn how to strut your stuff, Drag style.

Marcia D’Arc, will show you how to dress and how to sing like never before!

This will be fun for all the family and there will be a selection of dress and wigs for people to transform themselves. Of course, if  you do have your very own drag queen dress please feel free to bring it along!

Kids Workshop and Story Telling

Xeena and Jenny will also be designing and delivering the Children’s Work and Play workshops at the festival. If you’ve got tiddlers (big and small) make sure you find them. You can make masks to transform yourself into a Mythical Woodland Creature, make a banner for a procession through the woods, find a new world behind your own Fairy Doors and much more at Up in the Clouds Festival!

Up in the Clouds kid’s workshop will be on Saturday from 10am till 12:30pm, so you can relax for a bit whilst they are busy creating magical things.

Friday evening we will also be telling bedtime stories; either by the pirate ship around an open fire or in one of our magical yurts – all depending on the weather.

2017 Bands

Here at Up in the Clouds head quarters we are working hard to get the best bands. Up in the clouds is for everyone so our music will be eclectic; sometimes chilled, sometimes rocking  and plenty to get you on your feet and dancing.

Derdniks

We are really excited to have these guys rockin’ up our evening with their swinging grooves that will have you singing as well as dancing.

‘Four slick hepcats gammin straight outta the west with the swinginest rocknrollinest righteous riffs a Jumpin’ Jack or Jill can jive to. No jibber jabber here, just straight up ice cold jams!’

BeatDen

This band will have you on your feet and jumping with their funk, soul and hip hop beats: you won’t be able to stop yourself!

The ‘BeatDen band’ formed in November 2011. Their diverse background has led to them dabbling in many forms of music such as poetry, reggae, hip hop, soul, funk and many others, as well as the members of BeatDen playing extensively around Bristol and the south west.

The heart of the band derives from Oisin RS, a multi-instrumentalist who’s background has been heavily influenced by the likes of dub, reggae and funk, also Vgo a Hip Hop poet who brings his conjuration of internal rhythms, spilling over from performances onto unsuspecting audiences!

BeatDen brings a new angle of sound and creativity with positivity at the centre of it, resulting in a show that will keep you hooked from start to finish.

So happy to announce that War Against Sleep will be playing and its hard to explain what its all about but just read the write up below.

duncan_helmet_face

War Against Sleep: “Duncan Fleming is a genius of a songwriter walking a razor sharp tightrope between deranged humour and classic pop music. War Against Sleep is his ongoing battle against the absurd waking dream that passes for life, in which he plunders the hidden treasures of a thousand charity shop records, writing songs that tingle the spine, move the soul and lift the spirit.

The Twelve Hour Foundation

thf1[1].png

The Twelve Hour Foundation is a Bristol-based duo: Polly Hulse (analogue synth/rhythms) and Jez Butler (analogue synth/concrète sequences). Using found sounds and vintage analogue synths, they create a largely upbeat sound, reminiscent of – amongst others – the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Raymond Scott and the electronic side of ‘60s / ’70s library music

Their first album The Lighter Side of Concrete received great reviews and airplay by the likes of Stuart Maconie (The Freak Zone) and Pete Wiggs (The Séance / Saint Etienne), Belbury Parish Magazine (Ghost Box Records) and the Project Moonbase podcast. It also featured as a Ghost Box ‘guest’ release.

Having created jingles for Project Moonbase and Glasgow’s pop-up art station Radiophrenia, The Twelve Hour Foundation released Macaroni Cheese – a Paddy Kingsland inspired 7″ EP –  in 2015.

Live shows have included Supernormal Festival 2015, The Delaware Road, Reading, slots with Go Kart Mozart, Happy Meals and The Lovely Eggs,  in addition to a tour of Scotland supporting screenings of the film Dummy Jim, to which the band contributed incidental music. The Twelve Hour Foundation

Will Newsome

Will Newsome is a kora playing, boat dwelling, rainbow snatching musician from Bristol. The kora is an ancient West African harp with 21 strings. Will’s done some study in West Africa but he doesn’t play traditional songs, focusing instead on creating music with a range of influences and an eclectic mix of rhythms, melodies and harmonies.

Ian Anderson of fRoots magazine writes of him: “We are mesmerised. He launches into song, a meandering and unconventional structure pushed along by cascades of kora notes and an attractive voice that sits in style somewhere between Robin Williamson and Nancy Wallace.”
